Help Abolish Medical Debt in Wilson County Today
Every dollar you donate relieves $100 in Medical Debt

There’s a story in the Gospel of Luke about Jesus visiting the synagogue in his hometown of Nazareth. When he’s invited to read, he opens the scroll of Isaiah and reads the beginning of the 61st chapter:
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to set free those who are oppressed,to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” (Isaiah 61:1-2, Luke 4:18-19)
The year of the Lord’s favor is known in the Old Testament as the year of Jubilee—the end of a seven-year cycle in the Law of Moses given in Leviticus and Deuteronomy. In the year of Jubilee, the Lord said to the People of God, “you shall grant a remission of debts. And this is the manner of the remission: every creditor shall remit the claim that is held against a neighbor, not exacting it, because the Lord’s remission has been proclaimed,” (Deuteronomy 15:1-2).
The pastors and people of a small group of Wilson churches are banding together to make Jubilee happen in Wilson County this Easter with the abolition of our county’s $4.9 Million of medical debt. We encourage all of our neighbors in the City of Wilson and Wilson County to join this grassroots effort started by your neighbors from St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church/La Iglesia Episcopal de la Guadalupana, First Baptist Church, West Nash United Methodist Church, Winstead United Methodist Church, and First Presbyterian Church.
Our goal is to raise the $30,000 necessary for RIP Medical Debt to purchase and abolish the $4.9 Million of medical debt in Wilson County by Easter Sunday. On the day when we remember Jesus’ victory over the grave and our freedom in him from the debt of sin, we will help abolish crushing medical debt in our county. If, by the grace of God and the generous hearts of you our neighbors, we reach our goal before Easter, we will add a neighboring county to our campaign and increase our goal to abolish medical debt there also.
We invite all of our neighbors with the will and means to contribute generously to this campaign by clicking the donate button for our campaign on the RIP Medical Debt website. Alternatively, you can write a check to one of our partner churches with “RIP Medical Debt” written in the memo line. We will ensure your donation is forwarded to RIP Medical Debt and that amount will be added to our campaign display on the website. All other Wilson County pastors and congregations who wish to join this cooperative effort can do so by notifying Fr. Paul Castelli, Rector of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church at [email protected]

How RIP Works
Over a hundred million Americans, one in three, struggles with the weight of medical debt.
-
You make a donation
We use data analytics to pinpoint the debt of those most in need: households that earn less than 4x the federal poverty level (varies by state, family size) or whose debts are 5% or more of annual income.
-
RIP buys medical debt at a steep discount
We buy debt in bundles, millions of dollars at a time at a fraction of the original cost. This means your donation relieves about 100x its value in medical debt.
-
Together we wipe out medical debt
People across the country receive letters that their debt has been erased. They have no tax consequences or penalties to consider. Just like that, they’re free of medical debt.
