Medical emergencies and chronic conditions quickly lead to debt for millions of Americans every year. In 2020, $140 billion of unpaid medical debt was held by collection agencies. This unpaid debt can destroy the stability of households, making it difficult for them to recover from medical problems and leading many families into poverty. No person should need to worry about affording medical treatment, and yet debt from emergencies, chemotherapy, or surgery can weigh down families trying to recover from tragedy.
Great Rivers Presbytery is partnering with RIP Medical Debt to buy and completely forgive parcels of unpaid medical debt, freeing people from this unplanned and devastating burden. This partnership works to directly address the Matthew 25 goal of eradicating systemic poverty, and helps us care for our sick, disabled, and grieving neighbors. It is a blessing to be able to ease the burden of medical debt as Christ’s disciples.
We are excited to share this campaign with our congregations, and encourage everyone to donate. The first $8,000 raised will be matched with a grant from the presbytery’s Visioning Team. Since RIP Medical Debt purchases debt for pennies on the dollar, we may be able to forgive as much as $1.6 million dollars of medical debt!

With every donation, RIP uses its precise data analytics to pinpoint the medical debt of those most in need of relief: households whose incomes are less than four times the federal poverty level guideline or with medical debt representing at least 5% of gross income.

Your donations allow us to buy debt in bundled portfolios, millions of dollars at a time at a fraction of the original cost. On average, whatever you donate has 100x the impact.
Together we wipe out medical debt
